Dr.Groot Is Big at Sephora. In Seoul It’s a Minor Brand.

Dr.Groot is in 424 US Sephora stores. The Korean lineup is named differently and split differently — here's which line matches which scalp, how Koreans actually use it, and what to check on the label.

Every “Korean hair care is finally here” post I’ve read this month treats Dr.Groot at Sephora as the Korean product arriving in America. It’s the Korean brand arriving. The bottles aren’t the same ones.

I went and looked at both. The US range is sorted by outcome — thickening, thinning hair, scalp serum. The Korean range is sorted by scalp type, in different sizes, under different names, and the Korean hero size is a 700ml jug.

But there is a bigger thing the coverage misses, and it belongs up front: this brand is searched far more in the US than in Korea. Around 49,500 US searches a month for “dr groot”, against roughly 1,300 in Korea. It is on the Olive Young shelf, it is a real product from a very large company — and it is not one of the brands Koreans reach for first.

So if you’re standing in Sephora trying to work out which one is the famous one, this is the practical version.

What’s on the Sephora shelf

Quick timeline, because the coverage has been muddled. LG Household & Health Care announced the Sephora deal on 5 March 2026. Dr.Groot went live on Sephora.com on 1 April, appeared in select doors from 15 May, and as of 15 August 2026 it’s carrying 14 products in 424 Sephora stores. That’s the rollout finishing, not starting — and it isn’t the US debut either. The brand has been on Amazon there since 2023, and LG launched it back in 2017.

The core US range is named around one promise, thickening:

  • Hair Thickening Shampoo for Thinning Hair
  • Hair Thickening Scalp Conditioner
  • Roll-On Hair Thickening Scalp Serum
  • Miracle In Shower Scalp & Hair Hydrating Treatment
  • plus a few scalp treatments and an Amazon-only biotin-and-rosemary set

Clean, legible, very American. One problem, four steps.

What’s on the Korean shelf

Here it’s organised the other way round — by what your scalp is doing.

I checked the Olive Young listing in September 2026, and there were twelve Dr.Groot products. The names sort by scalp problem, not by hair goal: Clinical Relief for oily scalp (지성두피용, 350ml, ₩33,900), a 10-second water scaler for scalp pores, Intensive Care Multi Perfection for weak, limp hair (400ml ₩25,900 and a 700ml at ₩39,900), a Scalp Solution cooling shampoo in 700ml (₩25,900), a scalp nutrition tonic, a UV stress mist, and three PDRN products — a hairline booster ampoule, a volume ampoule shampoo, and a scalp hair pack. Same brand, same lab, different question asked at the shelf: not what do you want your hair to look like, but what’s wrong with your scalp.

⚠️ One thing changed while this article was live. An earlier version pointed oily-scalp buyers at a product called Aqua Deep Clean. That SKU has since been discontinued — its Olive Young page now returns “상품을 찾을 수 없어요” (product not found). The oily-scalp slot on the Korean shelf is now held by Clinical Relief 지성두피용. Korean lineups turn over faster than English coverage does, which is rather the point of this article.

That difference matters when you’re buying. The US shelf lets you pick by goal. The Korean shelf assumes you already know whether you’re oily or dry up there — which, honestly, most people don’t, and it’s the single most useful thing to figure out before spending anything.

There’s a size difference too. The Korean hero format isn’t a pretty 250ml bottle. It’s 700ml, and Costco Korea sells it as a 700ml + 150ml set. That tells you how the brand is positioned here — a bulk daily shampoo, not a treatment you ration out. Positioning is not the same as popularity, though, and that is exactly where the two markets part ways.

Pick your line by scalp type

The practical bit. This is how I’d send someone into either store:

Oily scalp — greasy by evening, itchy, you wash daily.
Clinical Relief 지성두피용 in Korea (350ml, ₩33,900); the thickening shampoo is the nearest US equivalent but it’s not built for the same problem. If your scalp is genuinely oily, buy the deep-clean type and don’t over-think the rest. A clean scalp is most of the result.

Fine, limp hair, normal scalp.
The intensive-care-for-weak-hair line here, or the US thickening shampoo and conditioner pair. You’re buying volume and a scalp that isn’t coated — that’s a real, visible thing. Just know that’s what you’re buying.

Dry, tight, flaky scalp.
Look at the in-shower hydrating treatment rather than piling on another cleanser. Washing harder is the usual mistake.

Shedding you’ve noticed in the last few months — after illness, a baby, a diet, a hard winter.
Any of these are fine as maintenance while it settles. Don’t buy the most aggressive-sounding one; buy the one that matches your scalp.

Visible thinning in a pattern — temples, crown, a widening part.
This is the one where a shampoo isn’t the answer. See a dermatologist. Korea has an unusually developed clinic culture for exactly this, and people here who deal with it generally do both — clinic for the treatment, shampoo for the daily upkeep. Treating the shampoo as the treatment is how you lose six months.

Sensitive scalp that reacts to menthol.
Patch it. That cold tingle is an ingredient doing something, not a sensation, and on an already-irritated scalp some people hate it.

What to check on a Korean label

If you end up buying the Korean version — from a Seoul trip, or an import site — the bottle will say 탈모증상 완화, “eases the symptoms of hair loss.” It’s a registered claim, and it’s built on one of five permitted ingredients. That’s genuinely useful to know, because it tells you what’s in your bottle:

Korean English What it’s doing
덱스판테놀 dexpanthenol conditioning, scalp comfort
비오틴 biotin the “hair vitamin” one
엘-멘톨 L-menthol the cooling tingle
징크피리치온 zinc pyrithione anti-dandruff workhorse
징크피리치온 액 (50%) zinc pyrithione solution same, liquid form

Brands stack their own named complexes on top — Dr.Groot’s is 마녹시놀 콤플렉스-A, Manoxinol Complex-A — but the five above are what the claim on the front of the bottle actually rests on. So flip it over. If your scalp is itchy and flaking, you want to see zinc pyrithione. If menthol stings you, now you know which word to avoid.

One expectation to set plainly, and then I’ll drop it: this is a scalp product. It cleans, calms and de-clogs, which makes fine hair sit better and an itchy head stop itching. That’s worth money and it’s what Korean buyers are getting from it. It isn’t regrowth, and nobody here treats it as regrowth.

How to actually use it

The usage habits are half of why this category works better in Korea, and none of it is on the box.

  • Wash twice. First lather lifts oil and product, second one actually reaches the scalp. This is standard practice here, not a hack.
  • It goes on your scalp, not your hair. Fingertips, not nails, and give it 60 seconds before rinsing. Most people rinse a scalp shampoo off before it’s done anything.
  • Rinse longer than feels necessary. Leftover residue is what makes fine hair flat — the exact thing you bought the shampoo to fix.
  • Dry your scalp properly. Going to bed with a damp head is the fastest way to an itchy one.
  • Give it eight weeks and don’t change three things at once. If you get burning or a jump in shedding, stop.

How Koreans buy it

Here is the part I can only write from here, and it is the reason this article exists.

Dr.Groot is a competent mass-market shampoo from a very large company (LG Household & Health Care), sitting in a crowded aisle at Olive Young next to a dozen rivals. It is not a prestige object in Seoul. But it is also not the Korean scalp-care default that the US coverage implies. Search interest, same month, two markets:

Search term United States Korea
dr groot / 닥터그루트 49,500 1,300
dr groot shampoo 40,500
korean shampoo 3,600

For scale inside Korea, of the hair and skincare brands I checked in the same pull: 미쟝센 (Mise en Scene) came in around 2,900, TS 샴푸 — the one Koreans actually name when the subject is hair loss — around 1,600, 려 (Ryo) around 880. Dr.Groot sits below Mise en Scene and roughly level with TS. For a wider frame, Torriden, a skincare brand, gets about 6,600.

So: a mid-pack Korean hair brand, and a top-tier one in America. Thirty-eight times more search interest in the US than at home.

⚠️ One honest limit on those numbers. Korea runs most of its searches through Naver rather than Google, so Google’s Korean volumes understate domestic interest — for every brand, including this one. I use them for relative comparison inside one market, never as a headcount. What they are good for is the gap between the two columns, and that gap is not subtle.

Landing between $40 hair serums at Sephora changes the frame, not the formula. It is a good everyday shampoo. But if the shelf position or the “what Koreans use” framing is what sold you, that is the thing worth knowing before you pay.

Same gap I keep running into in every category, really. It’s the whole reason I write what Koreans actually buy at Olive Young rather than another best-of list, and it’s exactly what happens with Korean sunscreen too.

FAQ

Is Dr.Groot available at Sephora in the US?
Yes. It launched on Sephora.com on 1 April 2026 and began rolling into stores from 15 May. As of 15 August 2026 it’s stocked with 14 products across 424 Sephora locations.

Is the Sephora version the same as the Korean version?
Not product for product. The US range is organised around thickening — shampoo, conditioner, roll-on scalp serum, in-shower treatment. The Korean range is organised by scalp type, under different names, in different sizes, with a 700ml bottle as the hero format. Same brand and lab, different assortment.

Which Dr.Groot should I buy for an oily, itchy scalp?
The deep-clean type — Clinical Relief 지성두피용 on the Korean shelf, which replaced the discontinued Aqua Deep Clean. Look for zinc pyrithione in the ingredient list. If your scalp is oily, cleaning it properly does most of the work.

What does 탈모증상 완화 mean on a Korean bottle?
“Eases the symptoms of hair loss.” It’s a registered Korean claim built on one of five permitted ingredients: dexpanthenol, biotin, L-menthol, zinc pyrithione, or zinc pyrithione solution (50%). Checking which one your bottle uses tells you what it’s actually formulated to do.

How long before I can tell if it’s working?
Give it eight weeks of consistent use, and only change one product at a time. Scalp comfort — less itch, less flaking, hair that isn’t flat by lunchtime — shows up first.
