Nearly 15,000 people a month search for “celimax retinol.” Another 8,000 search for “celimax retinol shot.”
The tube on the Olive Young shelf in front of me says retinal.
For a while I assumed that was a spelling problem — that people were typing the familiar word for the less familiar one. It is not. Celimax sells both, under names close enough to be mistaken for each other:

And both are searched for in English: celimax retinal shot tightening booster at 590 a month, celimax retinol shot tightening serum at 320.
So the question is not which word is correct. It is which of the two you are holding, because the molecules are different and so is the strength you should start at.
Retinol vs retinal, in one paragraph
Your skin cannot use retinol directly. It has to convert it: retinol → retinaldehyde (retinal) → retinoic acid, which is the form that actually does the work. Retinal skips the first step. It is one conversion away from active instead of two.
What that means in practice: a lower percentage of retinal is doing more than the same percentage of retinol. The tube in the photo is retinal 0.1%. Comparing that number against a 0.5% or 1% retinol product and concluding it is weaker is the single most common mistake people make here.

Panthenol at 1% is there to take the edge off — retinal, like any retinoid, can irritate. MATRIXYL 3000 is a peptide complex marketed for firmness rather than for tone.
That combination tells you what the product is aiming at, and it is not brightening. It is pores and firmness, which matches how Korea shelves it.
What the Korean shelf says
The POP panel above this product is unusually specific, and I’d rather quote it than paraphrase:

Two things worth noting. First, those are the brand’s own instrument-measured claims printed on a shelf display, not independent trial results — treat them as directional. Second, they are about pores, not wrinkles or dark spots. Korea is selling this as a pore-and-firmness product. A lot of English-language coverage files retinal products under anti-ageing generally, which sets up the wrong expectation.
It sits in the 스팟집중 (spot-focus) section, with Dr.Althea’s soothing cream and a 20% niacinamide serum as shelf neighbours.

15ml is a small tube, and that is normal for retinal — it oxidises, so brands package it small and often opaque. ₩20,790 for 15ml is not cheap per millilitre; it is priced as an active treatment, not a daily serum.

What Koreans actually reach for

Read the last three rows together. The vast majority of search — nearly 23,000 a month — goes to the generic “retinol shot” phrasing that does not distinguish between the two products. The full names, which do distinguish them, pull a fraction of that: about 4,200 for the Retinal Booster and 460 for the Retinol Serum.
So most people arriving at this product have not yet worked out that there are two, and the retailer they land on decides which one they get. That matters: someone comparing “0.1%” against retinol products will underrate the Retinal Booster, and someone expecting retinol’s slower ramp may over-apply it.
Also worth noting: this brand is bigger abroad than at home. 18,100 English searches against 4,400 Korean ones. Celimax is not one of the household names on the Korean shelf the way Torriden or COSRX are — it sits in a specialist section.
⚠️ A caveat on my numbers: Korea runs most of its search through Naver rather than Google, so Google’s Korean figures understate domestic interest. I use them for relative comparison inside one market, never as a headcount.
How to use it, and what to expect
Two of the more common searches on this product are how to use it (210 a month) and before-and-after results (170). Both deserve a straight answer.
How: at night, on clean dry skin, before moisturiser. Start twice a week, not nightly. A retinal at 0.1% is not a starter dose — see the section above on why the number misleads.
What to expect, honestly: retinoids work on a timescale of months, not weeks. The on-shelf claims here are about pore density and pore volume, so if you are looking for a before-and-after, that is the axis to photograph — pores in the same light, same distance, four to eight weeks apart. Not overnight glow.
⚠️ If you get flaking or stinging that does not settle within a couple of uses, drop to once a week. And do not layer it with an exfoliating acid or the VT spicule shot on the same night.

Buy it if: you specifically want retinal rather than retinol, your concern is pores and firmness rather than pigmentation, and you are comfortable introducing a retinoid slowly.
